Are you making it count?

Aside

People have asked me about the ‘Make it Count’ slogan that is being used for the race as I’ve included it in some of my email communication.  Quite honestly I love the idea of asking yourself if what you are doing is counting.   It’s a great little slogan to live by and challenge yourself as you look at whatever it is you are doing and making it count for something.  Whether you are training for a race, exercising because you want to or need to, working at a craft or hobby, spending time with your children and family or volunteering for a worthy cause, I urge you to Make it Count.  There are so many wonderful stories from our KIDS HOPE programs across the country it isn’t easy to pick just one.  But for the sake of space and wordiness, here we go.  From a mentor who often wondered if the time he was spending “counted”.  You can decide for yourself.

The teacher had been reluctant to even refer Zack to a KIDS HOPE USA mentor. As with so many children, it was a “no way-only way” situation. No way, because this problem child might overwhelm a mentor; but the only way this kid would make it was if a caring adult, especially a man, came into his life. The KHUSA director matched Zack with Mr. Green.

Mr. Green expected the challenge, and he was not disappointed. More often than not, one step forward was matched by two steps back as this troubled young boy tested his authority and dared him to quit the relationship. It was tough, and as the year ended, Mr. Green wondered if he had made any difference at all in the life of this child.

That is when Zack handed the following note to his teacher and asked her to share it with Mr. Green.

Dear Mr. Green,

I love you for a dad. We did fun things, but I couldn’t do one little thing wrong. You could have walked out the door. But you didn’t. Thank you for all you did. I will be at Lincoln for nine more days. [Then] I will be in middle school. I hope you can visit an old pal.

Your Pal,
Zack

It’s your turn.

Make it Count!

Are you training?

If you are training for the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25k
race, I urge you to check out this blog.
It’s from a fellow runner who is talking about the highs and lows of
training.  Your input is always
welcome. It’s always nice to share and know you aren’t alone.

Here’s a story from one of our KIDS HOPE Mentors.

“I have not seen Madison smile since
school began,” said her teacher to Madison’s KIDS HOPE USA mentor.
“Please help her lighten up.”

Over the next several weeks, Ms. Rachel
began each mentoring session with silly jokes, stories and the first grader’s
favorite game. Most important, she spent time with Madison every Monday.

Now, when Ms. Rachel meets Madison, she sees
the beautiful smile of a child who has a reason to lighten up.

Providing Hope

For many KIDS HOPE USA is one of those best kept secrets.  For the past 16 years KIDS HOPE has been blessed by amazing growth.  What began as 3 programs providing one on one mentors to 54 children has grown to over 700 programs in 33 states providing mentors to over 12,000 children.  4,000 of these mentors are located in Michigan and the need for more continues to grow.  As a relatively young organization, we continue to be amazed by the stories we hear about impact.  Stories like Joe’s.

Joe was a young 5th grader at a local elementary school that was matched with Mr. Gary his mentor.  As is common with most mentor relationships it took a little while for the relationship to warm up.  One day (on the third meeting) when Mr. Gary arrived at the local school to mentor Joe, he noticed that Joe didn’t look like himself.  Joe informed
Mr. Gary that in the morning before school he got sick (He threw up).  Obviously Mr. Gary was concerned and asked Joe why he was at school.  Joe replied “I knew that you were coming to see me today, and I didn’t want you to be lonely”.  In just 2 meetings (each an hour long), the bond had been established.  This relationship was one that Joe was looking forward to, and that Mr. Gary would not miss.

At KIDS HOPE we have thousands of stories about children who have made a connection with a loving, caring adult.  There are many children who are still looking for that mentor and many schools looking for KIDS HOPE churches to partner with them.  We need your help.  Join us in participating in the 5/3rd River Bank Run and supporting KIDS HOPE USA in raising money.
Join our team.  Help us provide hope for more children.
