Swim, Bike, Run: My First Indoor Triathlon

By Jennifer | February 28th, 2010 at 11:05 pm | 12 comments

Today I finally got to cross “Compete in a triathlon” off my life goal list. I’ve been talking about doing a triathlon for years, but never followed through and signed up for one. Turns out my last-minute decision to sign up for the three-event triathlon series at the David D. Hunting YMCA was a good move. I had a blast during the first of three competitions and felt like my Road Warrior training has really paid off. (A special thanks to my awesome coaches and teammates.)

My husband, Jeff,  made a video to document my first foray into multi-sport competition, so you can see how one of these things goes down. Check it out.

Okay, so the next indoor triathlons at the downtown YMCA are scheduled for March 28 and April 25. I would LOVE to do these races with fellow Road Warriors. Racing just isn’t the same without you guys. You can read more event details here and then let me know if you’re in.

I swim laps all the time, but I haven’t raced in the pool since 1993. It feels good to be back in the game. Being a Road Warrior rocks. If I wasn’t in training for the big race, I doubt I would have entered today’s competition. The training we’re doing really makes a difference. Thank you to everyone who has given me training advice and encouraged me to dig a little deeper. It all paid off today.

  5. Congratulations on your great finish! I would consider trying one of these but it’s been a loooong time since I’ve been in the pool. Do you think they would let me wear arm floatys? ;)

  7. Thanks for all the kind remarks. This first competition was a trip. I was super slow on my transition from the swim to bike and had to ride with my seat up too high because I didn’t allow myself time to adjust the bike. But I had fun and would LOVE it if the Road Warriors come out in force for the next one.

Mike, I don’t know if they’ll let you wear water wings, but all swim abilities are welcome. Plus, you’ll smoke the competition on the track which will add to the drama.

Jeff, I’m thrilled to hear that you’re planning on the next one. Now we have to work on the rest of our teammates. : )

  8. I don’t think I could do the swim.. unless certain someones.. (cough..Jennifer and Jeff) were willing to maybe meet up and give me some direction..;)

  9. Rachel, I’d be happy to meet up and give some direction. There are plenty of people competing who are better at biking and running and don’t have a lot of swimming experience, so you wouldn’t be the only one without a swim team background. The good news is that you only have to swim for 15 minutes and Road Warriors can do just about anything for 15 minutes, right?!
